The National Minimum Wage is the minimum pay per hour gross that almost all workers in the UK are entitled to by law.
From Thursday 1 October 2015, the adult rate of the National Minimum Wage (NMW) will increase by 20p per hour. The rate increase will apply to pay reference periods beginning on or after that date.
The rate is currently £6.50 per hour and will rise to £6.70 per hour, resulting in workers being better off by more than £300 a year gross.
This increase has been held out as the largest in real terms increase since 2007, and more than 1.4 million of Britain’s lowest-paid workers are set to benefit.
From 1 October 2015, the following rates as recommended by the Low Pay Commission will be:
- A 20p (3%) increase in the adult rate (from £6.50 to £6.70 per hour)
- A 17p (3%) increase in the rate for 18 to 20 year olds (from £5.13 to £5.30 per hour).
- An 8p (2%) increase in the rate for 16 to 17 year olds (from £3.79 to £3.87 per hour).
According to Government figures, the construction industry is showing signs of real recovery from the recession, driven by the demand for new housing and infrastructure. Specifically the Government has recently reported that new construction work continues to grow and grew as a whole by 7.4% last year compared to 2013.
